Silent Cooperation

An unexplainable thrill courses through the human body when this fantastic symbol of Freedom turns to the call and voluntarily returns to the Falconer.

What a fantastic image. Camouflaged against the horizon its prey doesn't stand a chance.

I think it is a redtailed Hawk that we have that hangs around here but has only once given me an opportunity to take a quick snap of it and then it was really far away and the focus wasnt great so I am still not sure if it is what I think. We live right on the ourskirts of the town so every time I see a deer, bird, squirrel or any other wild animal I consider myself fortunate. A lot of the times I dont have my camera with me when I see these animals but I have the pictures etched in my mind!

We are moving closer to town for our children as soon as our house sells, but fortunatly I have some great places to go to get photos, and I think our new place will have alot more small game oportunities minus the local chukar flock that lives by us now.. Thanks for all the wonderful comments. and besides even if you don't see many wild animals you are blessed with some FABULOUS horses to photograph..:)

Yes...I imagine it is the "return flight" that is most gratifying!

I'm pretty sure I saw a Cooper's hawk ripping through the treetops on my morning hike today. He/she was in a BIG hurry. :)

Wonderful picture! I've never been able to get birds in focus.

We had a wounded kestrel in our yard one year, and took it to a local wildlife rehab person. Unfortunately it was too damaged and had to be euthanized. I was so impressed with her work and the patients in her care.

Dave, and Wren, Thanks for taking the time to comment! It is amazing just how many raptors are out there once you start noticing them. Sorry that the little Kestrel didn't make it, they are such sweet little warriors.

Hi, Stacy, Thanks so much for your kind comments and questions. Feel free to email me since my answers will probably become kind of long for a blog. How jealous I am that you have that gorgeous wildlife around you in your state and your falconry work is so wonderful! Re the TC question:
I tried two teleconverters: a 1.7, then a 1.4. The 1.7 was always a little soft which bugged me, but the 1.4 is beautiful. The original lens must be sharp as well and it is better if the original lens is f4.0 or less so you don't lose too much light when adding the TC (mine is 2.8, but you could get away with 4.0 since for birds we don't usually go below 5.6 unless they're really small . I always had this thought in the back of my mind, though, as to whether something was wrong with my 1.7, so I would like to repair it and try again (last summer my camera+lens+TC slipped off of the tripod--what a nightmare--and I repaired the lens $$!, but not the 1.7 TC yet) but the 1.7 always seemed a little loose...anyway, feel free to email so I don't take up all the space on your blog.
